Up to what power do you supply submersible motors?

Trident submersible motors are available up to 7000 kW and up to 24 poles, with IP68 sealing and S1 to S6 duty down to 300 m operating depth. Voltage from 380V. We build 100% like-for-like to customer specifications, specifically for cutter suction dredgers, trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHD), booster stations, submersible pumps and other dredging and underwater applications.

What is the lead time for a bow thruster motor?

Depending on the desired approach we supply bow thruster motors from stock (immediately available in Dordrecht or via our international stocks), as revised-as-new (typically 1-2 weeks including complete overhaul with as-new warranty, provided no rewind is required), or fully new (minimum 3 months factory lead time with full customer specification). Up to 5000 kW, class certified by BV, LR, DNV, ABS, RINA and ClassNK.

Does Van Bodegraven also repair gearboxes and pumps?

Yes, our workshop in Dordrecht overhauls and repairs gearboxes and pumps of all sizes, from small servo reducers to large industrial gearboxes and process pumps. We disassemble, measure, replace bearings and seals, recondition shafts and test on our test bench. With the same as-new warranty as on newly supplied components.

Dormot Core is manufactured in Asia for projects where price is decisive, class certified non-essential by all 6 major class societies (BV, LR, DNV, ABS, RINA, ClassNK), frame 63-315, 0.09-200 kW IE2/IE3/IE4. How do you find the right replacement motor without a nameplate?

Send us a photo of the motor, drive shaft detail and mounting. Our sales engineers identify the motor from dimensions (frame size, shaft diameter, mounting type B3/B5/B14/B35), the foot or flange mounting pattern, and the coupling. With missing electrical data (kW, voltage) we use the pump/application data to calculate power. In 80% of cases we can propose a suitable replacement motor within 2 hours. Do you also supply a variable frequency drive (VFD) plus motor as one set?

Yes, we supply motor and VFD as an integrated drive system, not as separate components. ABB ACS580 for general applications, ACS880 for heavy industry, ACQ580 for water/wastewater, ACH580 for HVAC. Including cables, chokes and EMC filters, parameterised to the motor data and ready for commissioning. Selection based on load profile, speed range, grid configuration and EMC requirements. Also retrofit of old Danfoss and older ABB drives on existing motors.

Which marine class certifications do your motors carry?

We supply motors with type approval from all major class societies: Bureau Veritas (BV, FR), Lloyd's Register (LR, UK), Det Norske Veritas (DNV, NO), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS, US), RINA (IT) and ClassNK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, JP). For a 22 kW IE3 motor: Dormot Pro Zone 1 Ex db costs about €4,200, while Zone 2 Ex ec costs about €2,400, a saving of €1,800 (43%). Zone 2 is suitable for installations where gas/vapour is present only briefly or under abnormal operation. Zone 1 is mandatory where an explosive mixture can occur regularly during normal operation.

Which ATEX zones do you supply?

Does an ATEX motor need extra documentation?

Yes. With every ATEX motor you receive: (1) EU declaration of conformity per directive 2014/34/EU, (2) IECEx Certificate of Conformity per IECEx 60079-0 + relevant protection method (60079-1 for Ex db, 60079-7 for Ex eb/ec, 60079-31 for Ex tb), (3) Operating and installation instructions in your language, (4) Nameplate check (characteristic ATEX marking with Ex symbol, gas group, temperature class, certificate number). What is the difference between ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 motors?

Zone 1 means an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to be present during normal operation and requires Ex db (flameproof) motors such as ABB M3JP or M3KP. Zone 2 means an explosive atmosphere only occurs occasionally and can use Ex ec (increased safety / non-sparking) motors such as ABB M3GP or Dormot Pro Ex ec, which are 35 to 50 percent cheaper than Zone 1 equivalents.

When should I replace or overhaul a bow thruster motor?

Overhaul pays off when windings are still good, damage is limited to bearings, seals or rotor, and when the original is a common make. Replacement is often more favourable with burnt windings, older motors without support, or when specifications need to change. What is the difference between IE3, IE4 and IE5 efficiency classes?

IE classes indicate the energy efficiency of industrial motors per IEC 60034-30. IE3 is Premium Efficiency and the EU minimum since 2017 for 0.75-375 kW. IE4 (Super Premium) saves 2 to 4 percent extra. IE5 (Ultra Premium), usually SynRM technology such as ABB SynRM, delivers another 20 percent lower losses and pays back within 1 to 3 years in continuous operation.

The price of an ATEX Zone 1 motor (Ex db flameproof) ranges from about €850 for 0.75 kW to €28,500 for 355 kW. What does revision of a 55 kW motor cost?

A revision without rewinding costs approximately €2,500. With rewinding totals €4,500-5,000. For comparison: a new ABB 55 kW IE3 motor costs around €4,500, a new Dormot Pro around €2,800. Revision without rewinding is thus €2,000 cheaper than ABB new and typically 10+ weeks faster to deliver. Compared to Dormot Pro new, revision is only marginally cheaper, then buying new often makes more sense. With rewinding, revision usually costs more than a new Dormot. For a 22 kW motor running 6,000 hours per year at 75% load, an IE5 motor saves about €470 per year in energy costs compared to IE3. An IE5 motor typically costs €800-1,500 more to buy, so you earn back the difference in 2 to 3 years. After that it is pure profit, over 10 years IE5 gives about €4,700 extra.
