Where are DC motors used?

DC motors remain indispensable in installations requiring precise speed control at low speed, or in existing legacy systems with DC drives.

Cranes & hoisting equipment

DC motor drives for bridge and portal cranes, port cranes, drilling rig cranes and ship cranes. Extremely precise positioning at low speeds.

Rolling mill and press lines

Paper mills, steel rolling mills and aluminium lines: DC drives are used for their stiff torque characteristics at variable speed.

Lifts & cable cars

Older lift installations with DC motors are regularly overhauled rather than replaced. We supply rewound armature windings and reconditioned DC motors.

Winches, reels & mining

Offshore winches, mining hoists and anchor windlasses often use DC drives. High torque at low speed, shock-resistant, easily adjustable.

Commutator maintenance

Commutator grinding, turning or replacement. Laminate insulation check. Brush holder adjustment and worn carbon brush replacement. Spark test after overhaul.

Armature rewinding

Full rewinding of failed armature windings. Impregnation and drying. Dynamic balancing. Inductance and resistance measurement after assembly.

Field & auxiliary winding

Inspection and rewinding of series, shunt, compensation and interpole windings. Polarity and symmetry test.

Overhaul & documentation

Full overhaul report. Measurement of insulation resistance, winding resistance, bearing temperature and brush wear. FAT on brake dyno.

DC motors, technical background and applications

Why still DC?

Frequency drives have displaced AC drives in most new installations. Yet DC motors remain indispensable in existing legacy systems and in special drives such as dynamic braking and regenerative braking. The total cost of replacing a DC drive with an AC installation at large power ratings almost always exceeds the cost of overhaul.

Siemens DC motors

Siemens is the most common DC brand in European crane and hoisting installations. We supply reconditioned and new Siemens DC motors, including classic GP and 1G/2G series. Armature windings and commutators can be custom rewound in our workshop.

Creusen DC motors

Creusen (Roermond) was for decades the dominant supplier of DC motors for Dutch industry, petrochemicals and shipping. Creusen types are still widely in use. Overhaul and rewinding of Creusen DC motors is one of our specialities.

ABB & Reliance DC

ABB DC motors (DMP, DCZ series) and Reliance Electric (V*S, CX series) are common in the process industry and offshore sector. We supply reconditioned units and provide armature rewinding and commutator service.

Siemens, Creusen, ABB and Reliance are our core brands. We supply reconditioned units from stock and can source or rewind other brands on request.

Yes. Creusen overhaul is one of our specialities. We rewind armature windings, replace or machine commutators, and replace carbon brushes and holders. All Creusen types from classic N-series to later D-series.

A standard DC overhaul takes typically 1-3 weeks depending on damage and material availability. Armature rewinding: 2-4 weeks. Emergency overhaul on request.

A commutator is the rotating current transfer part of a DC motor. Maintenance includes: grinding or turning (removing run-out), checking and undercutting laminate insulation, and checking/replacing carbon brushes and holders.

In consultation yes. For some applications replacing a DC drive with AC + VFD is technically and economically attractive. We can assess this based on your installation.
