As ABB Authorized Value Provider for the Benelux and distribution partner for Dormot, we supply both series. This comparison is written with that dual role in mind: no marketing, only practical experience.
The core difference in one sentence
ABB M3BP is the world standard for cast iron process motors, over a hundred years of ABB track record, available in every corner of the world. Dormot Pro is a Dutch-engineered European-made motor with a broader configuration range (Compact, Double Compact, Increased Output) and a price point that is more attractive for Dutch OEMs.
Both are IEC 60034-compliant, both deliver IE3 and IE4. The difference lies in the surrounding ecosystem.
Power, frame and applications
| Property | Dormot Pro | ABB M3BP |
|---|---|---|
| Power range | 0.12-355 kW | 0.09-1300 kW |
| Frame size | IEC 63-355 | IEC 71-500 |
| Material | Aluminium + cast iron | Cast iron |
| Standard efficiency | IE2 / IE3 / IE4 | IE2 / IE3 / IE4 |
| Higher efficiency options | On request | Permanent magnet (M3BP-PMSM) IE5/IE6 |
| Special variants | Compact · Double Compact · Increased Output · 8P/12P | Customisations via ABB factory order, lead time 8-16 weeks |

Price positioning
For a comparable 22 kW IE3 4-pole motor in B3 mounting:
- ABB M3BP 180 M 4 (22 kW IE3): catalogue price typically € 2,800-3,200 net, with AVP discount € 1,700-2,100
- Dormot Pro 180 M 4 (22 kW IE3): typically € 1,450-1,750 net directly from stock Dordrecht
In this segment Dormot is priced 15-25% lower than ABB M3BP at comparable specs. For project orders of 50+ pieces the gap widens further.
When is ABB the right choice? When the end user has fleet standardisation on ABB, when global service network is critical, or when the specification requires "ABB or equal" with customer acceptance only for ABB.
When is Dormot Pro the right choice? For OEM projects where price is decisive, for retrofits where Increased Output frames fit existing mounting, and in marine applications where ATEX Zone 1 + Zone 2 in one series saves a lot of paperwork.
Lead time and stock
ABB M3BP: standard frames 71-200 in our ABB stock directly available (1-3 working days NL/BE), larger frames 225-500 factory delivery 4-12 weeks. ATEX variants via ABB Vaasa plant typically 6-10 weeks.
Dormot Pro: IE3/IE4 standard motors and all Increased Output variants directly from stock Dordrecht. Compact and Double Compact variants 1-3 weeks. ATEX Zone 1 (Ex db) and Zone 2 (Ex ec) standard configurations directly from stock, custom within 4-6 weeks.
In practice Dormot Pro wins on lead time for IE4 and ATEX, ABB wins on power ratings above 355 kW (where Dormot Pro stops) and on specific ABB-only variants such as SynRM IE5 magnet-free motors.
Warranty and service
For both series we provide 24 months full factory warranty from delivery. ABB has a global service network of in-house workshops in 100+ countries, for a ship that breaks down in Singapore that is decisive. Dormot has service via our own workshop in Dordrecht plus partners in Piraeus, Singapore and Shanghai.
For inland and intra-EU applications both service levels are sufficient. For globally trading fleets ABB's footprint is an undisputed advantage.
Efficiency and TCO
IEC 60034-30-1 requires an IE3 minimum of 92.7% for 22 kW 4-pole. Both motors meet this. For a 22 kW motor running 6,000 hours per year at 75% load at €0.18/kWh:
- IE3 (92.7% efficiency): annual energy cost approx. €16,000
- IE4 (94.0% efficiency): annual energy cost approx. €15,770, saving €230/year
- IE5 (PMSM, ABB only): 95.0% efficiency, annually approx. €15,610, saving €390/year vs IE3
With an IE5-PMSM premium of €1,500-2,000 over IE3 the payback is 4-5 years, defensible for 24/7 industrial applications, marginal for single-shift production. For IE4 vs IE3 the payback is typically 2-3 years in continuous duty.
Our recommendation per scenario
Process industry, 24/7 continuous duty, 100-355 kW ratings → Dormot Pro IE4. Best payback, shortest lead time, sharp price.
Globally trading fleet, fleet standardisation critical → ABB M3BP via us as AVP. Global service is the decisive factor.
OEM projects of 50+ pieces, price is decisive → Dormot Pro. The cost advantage makes the difference across the whole installation.
ATEX Zone 1 + Zone 2 mix in one installation → Dormot Pro. One supplier, one series, one documentation package saves paperwork.
IE5/IE6 ultra-premium efficiency → ABB M3BP-PMSM or SynRM. Dormot has no IE5 equivalent in its standard portfolio.
Power ratings above 355 kW → ABB. Dormot Pro stops there.
