WaveHexapod: wave energy between the wind turbines

The WaveHexapod is a hexapod with 6 generators on 3 buoys that converts the movement of waves into electricity. Van Bodegraven Elektromotoren is a partner in this Dutch wave energy project.

TECHNOLOGY

How the WaveHexapod works

Waves don't just move up and down, they also move in the horizontal plane. With its hexapod structure on three buoys, the WaveHexapod exploits this full 3D movement: every motion is converted into electricity through the six generators. Conventional wave systems only capture the vertical stroke; the WaveHexapod absorbs the full wave rotation.

The hexapod hangs from a fixed connection with the outside world at the top. For deployment at sea, submersibles have been designed: triangular platforms carrying 9 hexapods each, connected to the seabed with anchor cables only.

4×

higher annual output per wind farm possible, according to the project, by adding wave energy on the existing grid connection.

OUTPUT

More power from existing wind farms

The unique proposition: submersibles can be safely placed between wind turbines and only use the park's existing electricity connection, not the turbine poles themselves. According to the project, a wind farm's annual energy output can be up to 4x higher.

This works both greenfield (new parks) and brownfield: in depreciated wind farms the WaveHexapod keeps making optimal use of the existing cabling. Wave energy thus contributes to a more stable and diversified offshore energy mix.

OUR ROLE

The role of Van Bodegraven

Van Bodegraven Elektromotoren is a partner in the WaveHexapod project; co-inventor Frank van Bodegraven is a director of our family business. Our contribution lies where we have been strong since 1898: electric machines, generators and drives for marine conditions.

The maintenance philosophy fits us too: in heavy weather a hoisting system lifts the hexapods out of the water, and every five years they undergo an overhaul after which they are as new. Exactly the domain of our overhaul workshop in Dordrecht.

PARTNERS & FUNDING

Project, partners and funding

The project is an initiative of AE Group, Bos Wieldrecht and Van Bodegraven, made possible in part by the Just Transition Fund IJmond (nearly € 2.5 million), Kansen voor West and the European Union, in line with Dutch and European climate goals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the WaveHexapod?

The WaveHexapod is a wave energy converter: a hexapod with 6 generators on 3 buoys that converts both the vertical and horizontal movement of waves into electricity.

What is Van Bodegraven's role?

Van Bodegraven is a partner in the project, contributing over 125 years of expertise in electric machines, generators and overhaul. Co-inventor Frank van Bodegraven is a director of the family business.

Why between wind turbines?

Submersibles with 9 hexapods can lie safely between wind turbines and use the park's existing electricity connection. According to the project, a park's annual output can be up to 4x higher.
