ABB M3GP ATEX Increased Safety Ex ec motors (Zone 2 gas)

The ABB M3GP Ex ec is the ATEX-certified "increased safety" version for Zone 2 gas environments, more cost-effective than Ex db when Zone 2 applies. IE3, 0.12 kW to 1000 kW.

What is an Ex ec motor?

An Ex ec motor (Increased safety, formerly Ex e) uses an optimised standard construction with additional safety measures to prevent internal sparking, no flameproof housing required. Applicable in Zone 2 (rare or no occurrence of explosive gas mixture). Significantly cheaper than Ex db and lighter, while amply safe for Zone 2.

Typical Zone 2 applications

Ex ec is the practical choice for industrial environments classified as Zone 2, often large parts of petrochemical installations.

When Ex ec versus Ex db?

Ex ec is only permitted in Zone 2. For Zone 1 or Zone 0 you need Ex db (M3JP/M3KP). When in doubt whether your zone classification is correct, we are happy to consult your ATEX zone document or perform an installation review.

What is the difference between Ex db and Ex ec?
Ex db (Flameproof) is for Zone 1 gas, flameproof housing contains explosion. Ex ec (Increased Safety, formerly Ex e) is only for Zone 2 gas, optimised standard construction without flameproof housing, with additional safety measures against internal sparking. Ex ec is significantly cheaper and lighter than Ex db, but not permitted in Zone 0 or Zone 1.
When Ex ec versus Ex db?

What is the M3GP series?
M3GP is the ABB series under which both Ex ec and Ex tb versions fall. Frame IEC 71-450, power 0.12 kW to 1,000 kW, IE3 standard. The motor itself is the same, only the certification (Ex ec for Zone 2 gas vs Ex tb for Zone 21/22 dust) and optional IP rating differ.
Does the Ex ec version also have IECEx certification?
Yes, M3GP Ex ec is supplied with both IECEx and ATEX certificates. No extra costs for certificates; but a higher price than equivalent non-ATEX motor. For export outside EU (where IECEx is accepted) no separate recertification is needed.
