What is an Ex db motor?

An Ex db motor is a gas-explosion-proof electric motor with a flameproof housing. On internal ignition the explosion stays within the housing; flames and hot gases cannot ignite the external gas/air mixture. This is the highest protection level for Zone 1 (regular occurrence of explosive gas mixture) and is often also used in Zone 2 when high safety is required.

What does ATEX Ex db mean?

Ex db (Flameproof) is the highest ATEX protection level for gas-explosive environments Zone 1 (regular occurrence of explosive mixture). The motor has a flameproof housing that contains internal ignition, flames and hot gases cannot ignite the external gas/air mixture. ABB supplies this in M3JP (lower power) and M3KP (higher power) versions.

When M3JP, when M3KP?

Both are IE3 Ex db motors with IECEx + ATEX certificates. M3JP is typically supplied for lower power (smaller frames) and M3KP for higher power (larger frames, particularly 250 kW and above). Both series together cover 0.25 kW to 950 kW. For your exact application we identify the right series and frame size based on your kW/rpm/T-class requirement.

Which gas groups are supported?

M3JP and M3KP are available for gas groups IIA, IIB and IIC, with temperature classes T3, T4, T5 and T6. At order time exact specification of gas group and T class is required according to your zone classification and substance database. We always verify the IECEx/ATEX certificate numbers against your documentation.

Lead time ATEX Ex db motors?

Delivery from ABB Zone-1 stock where possible (typically 1-2 weeks). For specific configurations with deviating gas group, T class, higher IP rating (IP66) or special options the lead time is 4-8 weeks. We always recommend sending your old nameplate photo at first contact for exact replacement.
